-Down a group, reactivity increases (AR decreases, IE increases, E increases)
1. When AR decreases, decrease in electrostatic forces of attraction between nucleus & valence electrons

2. Shielding effect increases - increase in no. of quantum shells

-Across a period, effective nuclear charge increases (AR increases, IE decreases, E decreases)

1. Increase in no. of protons in nucleus

2. AR increases, increase in electrostatic forces of attraction between nucleus & valence electrons.

-Across a period, electrical conductivity increases:

Metal --> Metalloids --> Non-Metals

Good conductors of electricity (Good Reducing Agents) --> Semiconductors --> Insulators (Good Oxidising Agents)

-Across a period, melting point increases then decreases:

Metallic Bonding (I, II, III) --> Giant Covalent/ Macromolecular (IV) --> Simple Covalent Bond (V, VI, VII) --> Monatomic Atoms (VIII)

- Soft, Low density, Low melting point, Highly Reactive (with cold water --> salt + H2)

Group VII (Halogens/Diatomic Non-metals):

-Reactivity decreases down the group - wants to attract an electron, greater effect of shielding down a group, harder to attract

- High density, High melting point, High tensile strength

- 'Typical' Metal: Metallic lustre, Good conductor of electricity & heat, Malleable, Ductile

- Forms coloured compounds

- Catalyst - increases rate of chemical reactions
